Roussillon

The appellation is located in the Roussillon wine-growing region in France, and is named after the small town of Rivesaltes, located to the north of Perpignan. The vineyard area totals around 4.000 hectares, the area is planted with Muscat varieties used to produce a sweet fortified vin doux naturel. Only two grape varieties are permitted, Muscat à Petits Grains (also known here as Muscat de Rivesaltes) and Muscat d´Alexandrie (Muscat Romain). The wine is made in various colours and styles. Well-known producers include the CV de Baixas co-operative, Domaine Boudau, Domaine Brial, Château de Caladroy, Cazes Frères, Château Corneilla, Domaine Forca Real, Château de Jau, Château de Nouvelles, Château Planeres, Domaine de Rozès, Domaine Sarda-Malet, Domaine Vaquer and Arnaud de Villeneuve. The AC Muscat de Rivesaltes may also be used in the three other VDN appellations in the Rousssilon regon, Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes, if the vineyards of the producer are planted exclusively 100%) with Muscat vines.
