Communal appellation named after the commune of the same name, an enclave at the heart of the wine-growing region of Touraine, located to the east of the city of Tours on the Loire river in central France. The AC Montlouis has been in existence since 1938, the name was expanded to its current form in 2002. In the north, the zone borders on the Loire, and on the Cher tributary in the south, it lies opposite the more well-known region of Vouvrayr. The vineyard area total 240 hectares, the soils are clay, rich in flintstone, partly covered with sand. The white wine is made from Chenin Blanc (Pineau de la Loire) in several versions from dry to sweet. The AC Montlouis-sur-Loire Mousseux applies to sparkling wine, the AC Montlouis-sur-Loire Pétillant is for perlé wine. Well-known producers include Berger, Domaine de Bodet, Domaine des Liards, Thierry Chaput, Delétang, Domaine de la Milletière, Dominique Moyer and Frantz Saumon.
