  Gevrey-Chambertin AOC

Village-Appellation in the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy in France, named after the commune of the same name. In the south it borders on the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. The total vineyard area is around 500 hectares, which includes some vineyards in the neighbouring commune of Brochon. Gevrey added the designation Chambertin to the name of the town in 1847, that is the name of the best and most famous vineyard site on the Côte d´Or. A red wine from Chambertin was one of the favourite wines of emperor Napoleon (1769-1821). For this reason it is sometimes also referred to as the “king of wines and wine of kings“. A large part of the vineyards was owned by the Benedictine monks on the Cluny abbey, located south-east of Macon, as far back as the 13th century. Here the best red wines of Burgundy are made from Pinot Noir, though the addition of portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault is also permitted. These wines have a maturation potential measured in decades, they tend to be darker than those of many other communes in Burgundy. The most outstanding wines are from the nine Grand Cru sites. Chambertin is so famous as a site, that all the other eight Grand Cru sites have obtained permission to add this to their own names.

The Grands Crus are Chambertin (13 ha), Chambertin-Clos de Bèze (15 ha), Chapelle-Chambertin (5,4 ha), Charmes-Chambertin (32 ha, a section of the vineyard is called Mazoyères, as a result Mazoyères-Chambertin may also be stated on the label), Griotte-Chambertin (5,5 ha), Latricières-Chambertin (7 ha), Mazis-Chambertin (13 ha, also sometimes spelled Mazy-Chambertin) and Ruchottes-Chambertin (3,5 ha). The wine from the neighbouring Clos de Bèze may also be labelled as Chambertin, though the reverse does not apply. These two sites are considered to be the very best. The Premiers Crus cover a vineyard area of 85 hectares. They are: Au Closeau, Aux Combottes, Bel Air, Cazetiers (9 ha), Champeaux (6,7 ha), Champonnet (3,2 ha), Cherbaudes, Clos des Varoilles, Clos du Chapitre, Clos Prieur, Clos Prieur-Haut, Clos Saint-Jacques 6,7 ha), Combe au Moine (4,7 ha), Craipillot, En Ergot, Estournelles-Saint-Jacques, Fonteny, Issarts, La Bossière, La Perrière, La Romanée, Lavaut Saint-Jacques (10 ha), Les Cazetiers, Les Corbeaux (3 ha), Les Goulots, Petite Chapelle, Petits Cazetiers and Poissenot. Bwell-known producers include Bachelet, Burguet, Drouhin Joseph, Dujac, Esmonin, Faiveley, Jadot, Domaine Leroy, Maume, Mortet, Roty, Rousseau, Serafin and Varoilles.
