Appellation in the Bordeaux wine-growing region in France, named after the town of the same name, located to the west of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The vineyard area is 1.000 hectares. Until quite late in the 19th century, the wines of Fronsac were held in higher regard than those of neighbouring Pomerol, which clearly dominates today. Six communes are permitted to use the AC Fronsac. Parts of the communes of Fronsac and Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, which have a special type of soil, are allowed to use the AC Canon-Fronsac (or also Côtes de Canon-Fronsac). The red wine is tannic and has a long maturation potential, it is made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. As in Pomerol, there is no Cru classification here. Well-knownm estates include Château Canon, Château Canon de Brem, Château Canon Moueix, Château Dalem, Château de Carles, Château Fontenil, Château de la Dauphine, Château La Grave, Château la Rivière, Château La Vieille Cure, Château La Villars, Château Mayne-Vieil, Château Moulin-Haut-Laroque and Château Villars.
