This wine-growing region has a total vineyard area of 400 hectares, it is located in the Pays Nantais region close to where the Loire river flows in to the Atlantic ocean, in France. It was classified as a VDQS in 1984. The name „Anciens Fiefs du Cardinal“ (previously the cardinal’s estate held in fee) refers to cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642), who held the wines of this region in high regard. Mainly red and rosé wines are produced, they are made from Gamay and Pinot Noir (minimum of 50%), as well as from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Négrette and a maximum of 15% Gamay de Chaudenay. The white wines are blends made from Chenin Blanc (minimum of 50%), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Melon de Bourgogne and Groslot Gris. Well-known producers include Domaine de Barbinière, Xavier Coirier, Ferme des Ardillers and Michon.
