This appellation is named after the town of the same name, it is located directly to the east of the AC Saint-Chinian in the Languedoc wine-growing region in France. The vineyard area totals 1.800 hectares in 7 communes. The soils here are remarkably homogenous. It is thought that more than 80% of the soils are derived from a geological formation in the very early stages of the Earth’s formation. It is known as „Monts de Faugères", and is one of the oldest geological formations in France. Sediments of the primordial ocean created layers of clay soils that were subjected to both extreme pressure and great heat at the same time, in the process of folding. This process resulted in the layers of slate that predominates today. Red wine and rosé are blends made from Carignan and Cinsaut (maximum of 30%), Grenache Noir, Lladoner Pelut, Mourvèdre and Syrah (maximum of 40%). The white wines are marketed under the regional appellation Coteaux du Languedoc. Well-known producers include Domaine Alquier, Domaine Barral, Château de Estanilles, Château de Grézan, CV de Laurens, Château la Liquière, Domaine du Météore and Domaine Ollier-Taillefer.
