The „Domaine Jean-Paul Schmitt“ estate is located in the commune of Scherwiller in Alsace in France. Jean-Paul Schmitt took over the estate from his parents in 1983. The general manager is Bernd Koppenhöfer. The vineyard area totals eight hectares, the slopes face south-south-west, and two thirds of the vineyards have granitic soils. The vineyards are located on the upper slopes of the Rittersberg mountain, just below the ruins of the Ortenbourg castle, which date back to the 13th century. Grape varieties planted are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Pinot Auxerrois, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Muskat Ottonel kultiviert. Organic wine-growing guidelines are strictly implemented. Early manual pruning in late spring significantly reduces yields (45 hl/ha on average). Three ranges of wines are produced: „Lagenwein Rittersberg“ (dry white and red wines), „Réserve Personelle“ (sourced from wines of which some are more than 60 years old), as well as the sweet wines „Rittersberg Vendanges Tardives“ (late harvest) and „Rittersberg Sélection de Grains Nobles“ (Beerenauslese, noble late harvest).
