This region is located on the upper Loire river on the borders of the Massif Central mountains in central France. It was classified as a VDQS in 1977. Certain towns may add their commune names to the AC, they are Boudes, Chanturgue, Châteaugay, Corent and Madargues. The vineyard are totals 370 hectares. Red and rosé wines account for two thirds of the production, they are made mainly from Gamay, with the permitted addition of Pinot Noir. The white wines are made from Chardonnay. Well-known producers include Bourcheix, Pradier and Persilier.
