This small appellation is named after the commune of the same name, and is located in the Roussillon wine-growing region in France, at the foot of the Pyrenees directly on the border with Spain. It covers the same geographical area as the AC Banyuls. The vineyard area totals 430 hectares, the vineyards are located on the Mediterranean coast in the four communes of Banyuls-sur-Mer, Cerbère, Collioure and Port-Vendres. The red wine must contain a minimum of 60% of Grenache Noir and/or Mourvèdre and/or Syrah (with no single variety allowed to account for more than 90%), as well as Carignan and Cinsaut. For the rosé, a maximum of 30% of Grenache Gris is additionally permitted. The production of white wine has only been permitted since 2003, this must contain a minimum of 70% of Grenache Blanc and/or Grenache Gris, as well as a maximum of 30% of Tourbat (Malvasa), Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier (with no single variety to exceed 15%). Well-known producers include Chapoutier, Château de Jau, Domaine de Baillaury, Domaine du Mas Blanc, Le Cellier des Templiers, Le Clos de Paulilles, Domaine de la Rectorie, Domaine la Tour Vielle and Domaine Vial-Magnères.
