The appellation is named after the commune of the same name, it is located in the Côte de Beaune (Cóte d´Or) region in Burgundy in France, five kilometres north of the Beaune appellation. The vineyard area totals 134 hectares. In the north, it borders on the famous appellation Aloxe-Corton. There are no Grands or Premiers Crus. 99% of the production is of red wines made from Pinot Noir with optionally small portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. A large portion of the wines is marketed under the lesser appellation Côte de Beaune-Villages. An alternative appellation applicable exclusively to red wines is Chorey-lès-Beaune Côte de Beaune.
