This is a village appellation in the Côte de Nuits section of Burgundy in France. As was done frequently in the 19th century, the name of the best vineyard was added to that of the village. The vineyard area totals around 150 hectares. The vineyards are on soils of limestone and clay, and produce outstanding red wines, made primarily from Pinot Noir with small portions of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. There are two Grand Cru sites, Bonnes Mares (13,5 ha, a small part is located in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis) and Musigny (9,3 ha). Well-known producers include primarily Domaine comte de Vogüé, and for example, Barthod-Noellat, Bertheau, Joseph Drouhin, Faiveley, Grivot, Mortet, Mugnier, Perrot-Minot and Roumier. There are 24 Premiers Crus in total (with 60 ha), these are Aux Beaux Bruns, Aux Combottes, Aux Echanges, Derrière la Grange, La Combe d´Orveau, Les Batudes (3,4 ha), Les Borniques, Les Carrières, Les Chabiots, Les Charmes (9,5 ha), Les Chatelots, Les Combottes, Les Cras, Les Feusselottes (4,5 ha), Les Fuées (4,4 ha), Les Groseilles, Les Gruenchers, Les Hauts Doix, Les Lavrottes, Les Noirots, Les Plantes, Les Sentiers (4,9 ha) und Les Véroilles, and of these Les Amoureuses (5,4 ha) is considered to be outstanding.
