The appellation is named after the city of the same name, and is located in the extreme west of the wine-growing region of Provence in France. It was the first area in the region to be classified in 1936. The vineyard area totals only 180 hectares, they are located a few kilometres to the east of Marseille. Unusually for this region, more than 70% of total production is of white wines around 20% are rosés, with only a small amount of red wines. The white wines are blends made from the main varieties Clairette and Marsanne (together these must make up a minimum of 60%, with a minimum of 30% of Marsanne), as well as Ugni Blanc, Pascal Blanc, Doucillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Red and rosé wines are made of Grenache Noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Barberoux. Well-known producers include Domaine du Bagnol, Domaine La Ferme Blanche, Château de Fontcreuse and Clos Sainte-Magdeleine.
