Bordeaux

This small appellation lies in the south-west of the large Entre-Deux-Mers region (Bordeaux) in France. It is named after the city of the same name, which was founded by the English in the 12th century, and which also lent its name to the famous car brand (in honour of Antoine de la Mothe, who was born here, and went on to found the city of Detroit). The AC was declared in 1980, and includes 21 communes on the right bank of the Garonne river. The vineyard area totals 240 hectares on gravelly and limestone-rich soils. It applies to sweet white wines made from botrytised grapes. Permitted varieties are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Red wines are produced under the AC Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. In the south, the Cadillac appellation borders on the three appellations of Côtes de Bordeaux Saint-Macaire, Loupiac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont.
