The appellation is located in the east of the Provence wine-growing region in France, it makes up around 80% of this area. To the west it borders on the large appellation Coteaux d´Aix-en-Provence. The vineyard area totals more than 19.000 hectares in the three départements Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône and Var. Three quarters of the production is of rosé wines, these are bottled in a special club-shaped bottle. Red wines and rosés are blends made from a maximum of 40% Carignan, a maximum of 30% Cinsaut, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Tibouren, a maximum of 30% Syrah, as well as a maximum of 30% Barbaroux Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Calitor, Clairette, Sémillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino. White wine is made only in small quantities, it is produced from Clairette, Sémillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino. They are frequently labelled as Blanc de blancs.
