The appellation is an enclave within the AC Coteaux du Layon in the Loire wine-growing region in France. It encompasses a total vineyard area of around 130 hectares on the three south-facing slopes of Beauregard, Fesles and La Montagne, located above the commune of Thouarcé. This is a wine with long maturation potential, considered to be one of the best sweet wines in France. It is made from mainly botrytised grapes, exclusively from Chenin Blanc grapes. The limits on yields are low, and the alcohol content must be a minimum of 13,5% vol. Well-known producers include Château de Fesles, Ch°arteau de la Fesnaye, Château la Varière, Domaine de la Croix des Loges, Domaine Godineau, Domaine les Grandes Vignes, Domaine des Petits Quarts, Domaine du Petit Val, Domaine de Terrebrune and La Ferme de la Sansonniére. A second enclave within the AC Coteaux du Layon, with similar wines, is the appellation Quarts de Chaume.
