This appellation is named after the eponymous city in which Napoleon (1769-1821) was born, it is located on the West coast of the French island of Corsica. The vineyard area totals 200 hectares on granitic soil spread in a radius of some ten kilometres or so around the capital city of the Département Corse-du-Sud. Around 60% of production is of red wines, they and the rosés are blends, made of a total of no less than 60% of the Barbarossa, Nielluccio, Vermentino and Sciacarello varieties (of which the last has to make up at least 40%), as well as a total of no more than 40% Grenache Noir, Cinsaut and Carignan (lof which the last may not be more than 15%). The white wine is a varietal Ugni Blanc. Well-known producers are Domaine Comte Abbatucci, Clos d´Alzeto, Clos Ornasca, Domaine Comte Peraldi, Domaine de Pietrella.
