I heartily agree. My wife and I spent 4 and-a-half years in Germany, living in the Rhein-Pfalz region. Bernkastel is not only in the center of the Mosel wine region (named for the tributary of the Rhein), but is a very picturezque, romantic area. The countryside is more gently sloped than the Mittel-Rhein, allowing for better vistas. If you have time, search for an "Ernst Bollig" vintner in Trittenheim (Weingut Ernst Bollig, Spielstrasse #33, 54349, Trittenheim. Tel 06507-99009, Fax 99098). Ernie (as he is known by all his English-speaking clientele) has created a business founded on catering to American, Brit, and Canadian military members stationed in Germany. He is quite fluent in English, thoroughly knowledgable about German wines, loves "healthy" women, and quite generous in his hospitality. (You may have problems sticking to a tight itinerary, as wine-tastings might turn to a dinner or lunch picnic.) His wines are good, relatively inexpensive (well, they all are compared to American import prices), and he offers a considerably broad selection of different grapes from family-owned properties throughout the Mosel valley. Tell him Robert Hume, one of Ed "Vic" Ballanco's pals from Einsiedlerhof, directed you to him. Give him my best regards, and tell him that we miss his wines very much. By the way, if you have time to travel a bit further into the Rhein-Pfalz, head to Freinsheim along the famous "Weinstrasse". It's a cozy town, surrounded by a medieval wall, and chock-full of small family wineries. It's just off the A-6 autobahn. Herxheim is another great spot for wine, although not as quaint. Look for the yellow Jakob Pfleger winery along the main street. His 2002 Spatlese Trocken Riesling is the best German wine I've ever had. At about 6 Euro (8 US dollars) a bottle, it's pricier than many German wines, but absolutely a steal.
