Subject: Re: Trockenbeerenauslese

Dear Randy,

True trockenbeerenauslesen are made from botrytis affected and raisined
berries and are among the most intense wines in existence. The precaution here is
that they are rarely enjoyable or pleasurable, at least in the Riesling
variety, before many years of aging. By many years I mean 20 to 30 years. I age
my own TBAs a minimum of 30 years.

The flavors here are wonderful, but they are so intense that they can be
truly unpleasant to drink before then.

One exception is the 2001 TBA from Gunderloch, a very highly regarded wine,
perhaps the wine of that vintage. It's actually enjoyable young, but will also
age many years as well..

Best, John Trombley
