Subject: Re: Trockenbeerenauslese

Hallo, Randy,

as I don't know the winery I checked the guide at wein-plus.de. Your
wine is not listed there, so I can only give you some general
informations.

The vinery is rated with one star, which means: "Good producer
Producer with either consistently good wines, or with significantly
variable results, of which the positive sides must dominate. Basic
wines or vintages must be balanced by others that are well above
average or even excellent. Selective buying of these wines is likely
to be worthwhile."

The 99 vintage however was rated only average at this vinery. I also
checked the information on the website of the winery - it is only in
German. They have a lot of awards. Beginning from Robert Parker to the
WineSpectator, but nothing for your wine and nearly nothing vor the 99
vintage. Most recommondations are for dry wines.

So I guess you will have a wine from a good vinery, but from a only
average vintage.

Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) means a type of late harvest wine. It is a
wine made of grapes which are dried like raisins while still beeing on
the vine. They are also affected by botrytis, which is an special type
of mildew. This mildew perforates the skin of the berry and due to
this it dries out and the sugar and extract concentrates in the berry.

As you can not plan to make a TBA (it depends on the weather) and the
harvesting is often done by hand, they are often very expensive. This
does not mean that every TBA is expensive. In supermarkets you can
find one of these wines for small money - and very low quality. I do
not think, one can find your TBA in supermarkets.

TBAs are alway very sweet wines. I myself prefer them with the dessert
ore cheese, rarely without anything to eat.

Cheers,
Stephan
