Subject: RE: austrian reds

Michael: Ah, a kindred spirit. My true wine passion is Austrian reds
as well. I've been quite successful here in PA getting Austrian reds by
ordering from Bill Mayer of The Age of Riesling. His info is listed
below. You may be aware of Terry Thiesse. Bill travels with Terry at
least annually to taste and buy Austrian and German estate wines.
Increasingly Bill is carrying more reds. He even is able to get wines
from the vin divino (Chicago) shipments. My favorites single varietals
so far are Heinrich's Blaufrankisch, Umathum's Zweigelt Reserve,
Lehrner's Blaufrankisch Ried Steiniche, KRUTZLER BLAUFRANKISCH WEINBERG
2000 and Schrock's Ruster Zweigelt. The best blend I've had is from
Paul Achs named "Pannobile" 2000 (cab., blaufrankisch, st. laurant, I
think!) Bill has all of these except for the Umathum and Krutzler. As
an alternative, any of the varietals from Glatzer are great for everyday
drinking. Try the single vineyard varietals from Paul Lehrner, they're
a real treat and fairly reasonable. Shipping costs for the wines are
still quite reasonable considering what is saved on tax. Here in Pa.
there is a liquor tax of 24% included in the retail price and then the
state tacks on an additional 6% sales tax. Talk about robbery! Anyway,
Bill is quite a good guy and will ensure that your wines are shipped
with the utmost care, considering the weather and length of the trip.
I've been ordering several times a year from him for nearly 10 years and
have never had a "bad" bottle. It's worth it to get his newsletter.
You may want to take advantage of his inventory from 1999-2001 as he did
not change his prices even though the dollar tanked against the euro in
the past 2 years. Prices for the wines he first offered several years
ago have remained the same. In addition, the 1999 and 2000 vintages are
outstanding for reds and reportedly rate as the best in several decades.
I've been to Bill's home once to pick up a small order of Heidi
Schrock's ausbruch dessert wines while I was in Berkeley on business.
Although a true Californian (laid back and easygoing), Bill is
nonetheless engaging and very wine-savvy. If you contact him please
tell him that I send greetings and should be placing my spring order
soon. Let me know how you make it in your search. Good luck. Jerry

Subject: [wineforum] austrian reds

i'm a huge fan of austrian reds, but living in the u.s., i find it
quite difficult to track them down. austrian whites, on the other
hand, are plentiful and easy to find.

although i live in new york and have easy access to great wine
stores, selection is limited and some of the items that i'm looking
for just can't be found (e.g., '00 anton iby cuvee anton, '00 johann
heinrich terra o., '00 krutzler perwolff & eichkogel, '00 t-fx-t
arachon, '00 gernot heinrich gabarinza, ...). it seems that chicago
area retailers have the best austrian red selection, likely due to
the fact that the primary austrian red wine importer is vin divino,
based in chicago. in fact, most of my austrian red collection has
come from chicago-based online retailers.

so my questions are: can anybody suggest how i might be able to more
successfully source the austrian reds that i want? also, could you
please note and describe the austrian reds that you recommend (you
may have gathered from the above examples that i like the blends,
however, i would also be grateful for single varietal suggestions)?
your advice is greatly appreciated!
