Subject: Vintage in Germany 2006 |
Dear Members of the Forum, The news comming in about the Vintage 2006 in Germany are very poor. Massive rainfalls in August and Oktober created huge problems in most growing areas. It was reported that there are big rot problems, particulary in flat vineyards with heavy soils. Last weeks good wheather definitly came to late to save the main part of the harvest. The efforts due to selective harvest are huge. Therefore the yields are very low. 40-60% less than a normal havrvest was predicted. This will create a difficult situation for the big wine cellars, who already suffered hig prices due to last years small yields, but also for all self exploiting wineries, which will not be able to deliver the normal amounts of wine to the market. Some wineries drove with their harvesters day and night to get the grapes in as soon as possible. This will create a lot of work for the winemakers and good results for the companies selling oenological fittings. Some say 2006 is worse than 2000, which was the last really bad vintage in most of Germanys growing areas. Still we all hope the best and for the final days of the vintage 2006!
