I have frequent contacts to wine producers only in the Mittelrhein and Nahe regions, and the consensus seems to be: 2005 had some warm periods interspersed with lots of rain, causing widespread rot round about harvest time.Conscientious producers had to hand-select and cut out a lot of rotten grapes, thus yields are down as much as 30%. What was healthy was very good, with high must weights and quite a bit of "good" rot (botrytis), so there are plenty of BA's and TBA's around. Practically nobody left any grapes hanging for Eiswein, and this proved a wise decision.

First wines should be coming out in March, and generally expectations for quality are good.

Kind regards,
Peter
