Ray,

A "Großes Gewächs" is NOT a QmP; the expression is not covered by German
wine law (but is something as a brand of a growers' business association,
the VdP); as far as I know these wines can indeed be chaptalized.

Yes, in Mosel-Saar-Ruwer "Großes Gewächs" is replaced by "Große Lage"
(which can be sweet). [and in the Rheingau by "Erstes Gewächs" that is
covered by German law and includes also non-VdP growers]

No.

Not in the near future. And there will be also some future for the "good
old" Prädikat system, at least for sweet wines.

VdP growers have "Großes Gewächs", non-VdP growers "Selection" [if they
like and can]. [Diel, the president of VdP Nahe, was an exception.] There
are some more restrictions for making a "Großes Gewächs" compared with
"Selection".
All these parallel classifications are somewhat confusing.

Best wishes,
Jochen Müller
