As far as I know, Grosses Gewächs wines are LIKELY to be higher in alcohol. I doubt if they are required to be. They must meet the same ripeness standards as any other Spätlese. They will be higher in alcohol, too (assuming that no Sussreserve is used) simply because essentially all sugar is converted to alcohol. There is no requirement as to the orientation of the vineyard. The vineyards are chosen for their historic association with high-quality wines, not their orientations. Again, they are very LIKELY to be oriented in a southerly direction, but not all are.
