Subject: Re: Liebfrauenmilch (was: Hi Fellow ..

Worms, pronounced "vorms" is a city well worth a visit. This is the site
where in 1521, Luther stood before the Imperial Diet accused of heresy after
nailing his theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church. The "edict of
Worms", signed by Charles V, branded him a heretic. Worms became a
Protestant city during the Thirty Years' War, when the city suffered
considerable damage.
Did you know that the famous Liebfrauenmilch wines are named after the
Liebfrauenkirche ( Church of our lady) in Worms? This white wine was first
produced in the convent in the 15th century.
The city is also famous as being the inspiration for Richard Wagner's Opera
"Der Ring Des Nibelungen".
.................but while searching for more information on this
"Liebfrauenmilch" vers. "Liebfraumilch" discussion I found to my own
surprise, that during the very recent years those terms had suffered greatly
from being watered down to the disadvantage of the formerly exclusivly high
quality of the "Liebfrauenmilch". In terms of quality, both the above names
today unfortunately stand for low quality wines. Today, wines of this sort
are produced for export only, mostly to the UK and the US, where they seem
to enjoy widespread popularity, while they are almost totally ignored in the
producer country Germany for reasons of very low quality. The wines under
this label are expected to contain at least 51% Riesling, the rest being a
mix of Silvaner, Muller-Thurgau and/or Kerner. The label need not mention
the mix of grapes used for the production - and the terms have indeed become
interchangeable..........commerce ruined a great wine.
It is a shock. Pour me a glass of good Wurttemberg wine, a Trollinger, a
Spatburgunder, a Lemberger
Cheers
Wolf.
