Raymond and Jim,

oh dear, the explanation I had hoped would clarify matters was not that clear after all. Let me try again.

First, Liebfraumilch was for decades a very popular type of wine, and is still sold in large quantities, particularly in the UK and the USA. If you like this style, don't feel embarassed. In Germany itself, this is virtually unknown, it is all made for export. The designations we consider as the "cheapies" are Liebfraumilch and Liebfrauenmilch, which are synonymous. These wines are usually blends of different grapes, mostly dominated by Müller-Thurgau, with little or no Riesling content.

The wines we (in Germany) consider to be good quality are vineyard-designated wines, labelled "Wormser Liebfrauenstift" or "Wormser Liebfrauenstift Kirchenstück ". These are the high-quality wines, and are straight Riesling varietals from a specific vineyard, which gave the name to a whole generic category of wine.
Hope this is clearer.

Cheers
Peter
