Colin, I agree with you, that this 'Blue Nun' and 'Black Tower' stuff is not
worth to carry the name 'wine'. But people drink it, and drink a lot of it.
Even in the UK. That's the reason why (not Germany as you write, since wine
production is a private enterprise, has nothing to do with the country - ,
but) the producers of this stuff export it, since it is money in their
pockets.
The difference to what is called "Wine" is, that this stuff is mixed
together from all sorts of left over quality wine (the German word for it is
"panschen") - and, if it is 'too sour' (dry) sweetened with sugar.
Just as the majority of people never learn anything about wine, more than
that it is a sweetish, red or white liquid, made on a good part of grapes,
the above stuff will never cease to find its clientele. No hope!
But then again, for your own consumption: The Rieslings, dry white and
fruity, grown in Germany and the Alsac, and from there brought by emigrants
to California and Australia, are still considered by the connoisseurs "King
of Wine".
