Franz Ehrenleitner, Geschäftsführer der Winzer Krems

The origins of the wine co-operative in the city of Krems, with its famous address of Sandgrube 13, goes back to the wine growers guild of Krems and Stein founded in 1447. This grower’s guild is the oldest in the German-speaking countries. In 1938, quality-conscious wine growers of the guild founded the Genossenschaft Winzer Krems, the current wine co-operative. The general manager is director Franz Ehrenleitner. The co-operative has 1.450 with a total of 900 hectares of vineyards, mostly located in the Kremstal wine-growing region, but also with some holdings in the Wagram, Kamptal and Traisental regions. The wine growers are advised and supported throughout the year by specialists in the fields of new plantings, pruning, plant protection, soil work, canopy management, thinning out and in selecting the best time for picking. Work in the vineyards follows the guidelines of integrated, sustainable plant protection programme. Yields are limited to no more than 7.000 kilogrammes per hectare. Computer programmes are used to determine the optimum harvesting order. The entire production is kept separate according to sites, varieties and quality classifications, and processed accordingly. 85% of the grapes undergo whole bunch pressing. The main varieties are Veltliner (70%), Zweigelt (15%) and Riesling (10%), the remaining 5% are made up of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and St. Laurent. Ranges produced are the premium range Kellermeister Privat or Kellermeister Prädikat, as well as the Sommelier range. Three estates have their grapes vinified exclusively in Krems, they are Count Bubna-Litic (Nussdorf in the Traisental), Freifrau von Vogelsang (Krems) and the Hauerinnung Krems und Stein guild. 40% each of the production goes to better-class food retailers and to restaurants, both in Austria and elsewhere. The best-known brands are the Grüner Veltliner Kremser Goldberg, Riesling Kremser Kremsleiten and Riesling Kremser Pfaffenberg, which are also served at the opera ball in Vienna. Vinotheque cellars are available in Krems and Langenlois, where old vintages dating back to 1947 are stored. The Krems co-operative is one of the few certified and controlled filling operations for organic wine in Austria. Together with mineral water supplier Römerquelle the premium spritzer product „A´prima“, sold in bottles, has been created. A show vineyard with many different varieties was opened in 2003. and building of a new cellar and press house was commenced at the same time.

The vintage 2006

Following on from a slightly heistant start, the Winzer Krems cooperative sent in a large range for tasting this year. With the exception perhaps of the very basic wines, all of the wines from the lower mid-level upwards can be recommended without hesitation. The standard of the Winzer Krems range shows a very good homogenous level, making it one of the best producers in its class. Our compliments!
