KamptalThe estate is located in the small town of Langenlois in the Kamptal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. It was founded in 1938, when the father of the current owner bought the estate and property. He was a newcomer to the business, visited the viticultural school in Krems, and was the first in town to encourage and implement the high trellising system developed by Lenz Moser#Moser Lenz III. (1905-1978). Today the estate is run by Karl and Brigitte Steininger. The wine adventure park Loisium was opened on the property of the estate on 20th September 2003, the underground passages of which are connected to the cellars of the estate. The Steiningers are one of three families inviolved in the project as shareholders. The vineyard area totals 30 hectares, with holdings in the Heiligenstein, Spiegel, Steinhaus and Koglberg sites. 80% of the area is planted with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner (50%), Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, the remaining 20% is planted with the red varieties Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. The premium wines include the white blend „Young†(75% Grüner Veltliner, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Muskateller), the barrique-matured red blend „Lisa†(Pinot Noir, Merlot, Zweigelt), Riesling Kabinett, Grüner Veltliner Novemberlese (picked in November), Zweigelt Novemberlese and the flagship of the estate, the „Grand Grü†(Grüner Veltliner), which is matured in a large barrel of acacia wood. This latter wine is also available in magnums. A visit to the Champagne area inspired Karl Steininger to produce sparkling wines, and the bottle-fermented sparkling wines produced here are among the best in the country. These are vintage varietal wines made from Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Traminer, Cabernet Sauvignon (rosé) and Zweigelt, as well as a Burgundian blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The estate is a member of the Vinovative association.

The vintage 2006 |
| The tasting of the 2006 vintage served to confirm this is yet another excellent vintage here. The wines are of a high and very high standard, and as far as the sparkling wines are concerned one is tempted to add - naturally. There is nothing to complain about here, we can recommend the entire range without exception or reserve. For this kind of performance across the board the three-star rating is certainly warranted, and if things continue along this path the fourth star cannot be far off. Our compliments! |

The vintage 2005 |
| Although only a small range of samples was submitted, it is nevertheless clear that the Steininger estate has produced perfect craftsmanship in this vintage, which was both good and difficult. All of the wines presented have real class, and the Veltliner Grand Cru is one of the best examples of this variety in this vintage. The tremendous sparkling wines, too, need fear no competition, the estate has been a top performer in this category for some time. |
