The estate is located in the commune of Stratzing in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The family has been involved in wine production since 1865. A vaulted cellar, which is still in use, is 350 years old. The vineyard area totals 12 hectares, with sites located in Stratzing, in steep terraced sites around Senftenberg and in various locations around the city of Krems. The area is planted with the white varieties Sorten Grüner Veltliner (main variety at 7 ha), Riesling, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger and Gelber Muskateller, as well as with the red varieties Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are worked in accordance with the principles of controlled, integrated, sustainable production (KIP – Kontrollierte Intergierte Produktion). It is the stated aim of the estate to produce elegant, fruit-driven quality wines. The more full-bodied wines are marketed under the „Priorissa“ label (must wieght at least 19 °KMW), a brand name of the „Kremstaler Convent“ producers association. The owner is considered to be an expert in handling Veltliner. The premium wines include, for example, the Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben Priorissa, Grüner Veltliner Kremser Weingärten, Riesling vom Urgestein Bergterrassen and the red blend Lena Marie (70% Zweigelt, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon). The wines are marketed with the initials „J.S.“ on a black bottle label. Wines from the Schmid estate are available in many leading restaurants in Austria, and are regularly served at state banquets. Annual production is around 60.000 bottles of wine.
