The estate is located in the commune of Großwiesendorf, 25 kilometres east of Krems in the Wagram wine-growing region in Lower Austria. It is currently headed by the fifth generation of the family. After completing his oenological studies in Krems, Harald Ernst took over the business from his parents in 1991. His first major success came only two years later, when his Riesling was selected the best wine in Austria, and state champion. The vineyard area totals 8,5 hectares on loess soils. They are planted with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as with the red varieties Zweigelt and St. Laurent. The strictly regulated viticultural practices of KIP (controlled integrated production) are implemented. For instance, nutrients in the soil are produced mainly by planting legumes, and producing humus in the vineyards. All grapes are picked by hand. Grapes are processed gently, this is followed by cool, temperature-controlled fermentation. The premium wines include the Grüner Veltliner in the variants Classic, Kabinett, Alte Rebe and Reserve, the Riesling Hohenberg and Zweigelt.

The vintage 2009

Quite a large range of wines which confirms the excellent impression we gained from previous vintages. In terms of pricing, Harald Ernst has remained very much down to earth, quite in contrast to his wines, which are full of character. Our compliments.
