The estate owned by Roman and Adelheid Pfaffl is located in the commune of Stetten close to Korneuburg on the north-western boundaries of the city of Vienna, in the Weinviertel wine-growing region in Lower Austria. This farming operation has been run by the family for generations, and was taken over by the current owner and winemaker Roman Pfaffl from his parents in 1978. At that stage, the vineyard area was less than one hectare, and wine production was an umimportant sideline. However, this was followed by the rapid rise of the estate, which has led to the owner being referred to as „Mr. Veltlinerâ€. Among other things, newly built tasting rooms, a vinotheque and a winter garden were opened in 2003. Sustainable vineyard practices are implemented, this includes permanent cover crops, careful canopy management, and avoidance of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and herbicides. The vineyard area in the Weinviertel region totals 41 hectares, and are spread over ten communes, with holdings in the top-rated Haidviertel, Hundsleiten, Neuberg, Rossern, Sandtal, Seiser am Eck, Terrassen-Sonnleiten and Zeiseneck sites. 70% of the area is planted with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner (clearly the key variety, with around 50% of the total area), Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, while the remaining 30% of the area is planted with red varieties (an increasing trend) Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Cabernet Sauvignon. The premium wines include, for example, the Grüner Veltliner Zeiseneck Weinviertel DAC, Hundsleiten Grüner Veltliner, Goldjoch Grüner Veltliner, Terrassen Sonnleiten Riesling, Altenberg St. Laurent and the red blend „Excellent†(70% Zweigelt, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon). Wines have also been produced in the Vienna wine-growing region since 2004. The vineyards are located close to the winery, and the area totals seven hectares in the Herrenholz and Praschen sites in Stammesdorf. They are „Wien 1†(white vineyard blend of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Pinot Blanc), „Wien 2†(fruity red blend of Blauer Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon), while the latest creation is a pure varietal Pinot Noir. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wine, brandy and grappa-style spirits are also produced. Roman Pfaffl was the president of the regional committee for the Weinviertel region, and as such played a major role in creating the first classified wine in Austria, the „Weinviertel DACâ€, which has been available since the 2002 vintage, and is made from the variety most typical for the region, the Grüner Veltliner. The estate is a member of the Premium-Weingüter Weinviertel association. From 2000 onwards, the Pfaffl family has also leased the vineyards of the Schlossweingut Bockfliess estate.

The vintage 2009

The lovely Veltliner Hundsleiten is the flagship wine this year, heading up a range that may not quite reach the level of the previous vintage, but is certainly most enjoyable once again. The Riesling and Pinot Blanc are as well classy wines, and the Saint Laurent as well as the two wines from Vienna provide a lot of pleasure at a small price.

The vintage 2008

Roman Paffl has been one of the leading producers in Austria for many years.Another development over the years has been the consistent and significant enlargement of this wine estate, which has however been no impediment, but rather appears to set free the creative juices. The change in generations has also apparently not proved a problem, nor the fact that Roman Pfaffl is so deeply involved in work benefiting the entire Weinviertel region. That has to be the result of the analysis if one takes the practically perfect range of wines produced in the generally difficult 2008 vintage as a measure. Even the so-called basic wines are very good, and the single vineyard wines are in any case in a class of their own, with an unmistakable signature and evidence of their unique terroir. Once again this year the Pfaffl estate is a large, unmistakable and authentic, prestigious landmark for the Weinviertel region.
