The „Gerald und Wilma Malat” estate is located in the commune of Furth-Palt in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria, right next to the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig. Gerald Malat is the current president of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association. Ever since the 1070’s, he has been regarded as a doyen and a pioneer of the Austrian wine scene, and has particularly focused on the red wine culture in Lower Austria. Among others, he was one of the first wine producers in Austria to use barriques. The vineyard area totals 30 hectares, 65% of this area is planted with the white varieties Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller and Pinot Gris, the remaining 35% are planted with the red varieties Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Laurent and Merlot. Strict organic viticultural practices are implemented, including using only compost for fertilising, batural humus soils and sustainable grape production. A large portion of both the red and white wines is matured in barriques of French Alliers oak. The premium wines include, for example, the Grüner Veltliner Höhlgraben, Grüner Veltliner Dreigärten, Grüner Veltliner Das Beste, Riesling Silberbühel, Riesling Steinbühel and the varietal red wines. Bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
