The „Rotweinbau Moritz“red wine estate is located in the commune of Horitschon in the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region in Burgenland in Austria. It was founded in the early 1960’s. Alfred T. Moritz has been running the estate since 2004. He is an artist (painter) who also stages „kunst&keller“ (art and cellar) events at the winery, combining modern art with the art of making wine. The vineyard area totals 2,5 hectares, this is planted exclusively with the red varieties Blaufränkisch and Blauer Zweigelt. Organic vineyard practices have been implemented since 2006. This means that no chemical herbicides, fungicides or insecticides are used. The small size of the estate means that more attention can be paid to every single vine and every single bottle of wine. Annual production is around 10.000 bottles of wine, each of which bears a hand-made label of felt, with a design by the artist Alfred T. Moritz himself.
