The „Martin und Christine Nigl“ estate is located in the commune of Senftenberg in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The building, which used to be part of the Domaine Starhemberg, is located below the Senftenberg ruins, and used to serve as a picking station. Its core dates back to the 12th century, it has been restored and altered, and was opened again in 2004 as the new home of the estate. A hotel and restaurant have been incorporated in the same complex as the winery. The vineyard area totals 25 hectares, with widely spread holdings in the Dornleiten, Gärtling, Freiheit, Hochäcker, Kremsleiten and Piri sites. 90% of the area is planted with the white varieties Veltliner (40%), Riesling (40%), Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller and Chardonnay, the remaining 10% is planted with Zweigelt. Integrated, sustainable vineyard practices are implemented. Selective hand-picking is employed, with several passages through each vineyard, with the harvest stretching over a month and a half. The white wines are matured in stainless steel tanks, and partly also in barriques. The best wines are marketed as the „Privat“ range. The Riesling and Veltliner wines from the Piri site are considered to be the best wines. In the Germany vs. Austria Riesling competition organised by News magazine, the Riesling Hochäcker Privat 1992 was declared the winner. The estate is a member of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association.

The vintage 2006

The wines of the 2006 vintage presented by Martin Nigl are exceptionally full-bodied, and high in alcohol, but also are just brimming with loads of fruit, mineral notes and a firm structure. We slightly missed the breeding and unmistakeable character of previous vintages, but we are still talking of an excellent range of wines here.
