The estate is located in the wine-producing commune of Langenlois in the Kamptal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The family has been making wine here since the mid-18th century, and Ludwig and María Ángeles Hiedler are the fourth generation in charge here. The foundation for today’s high quality was laid by Dr. Bruno Hiedler – a full-time medical doctor – in the 1950’s, who produced varietal Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris at the time, and added plantings of Pinot Noir in the 1970’s. He was one of the first to concentrate on small grapes, which produce more concentrated fruit and aromas. At the heart of the operation is the natural cellar dug deep into the loess soil. Sustainable vineyard practices are implemented, and the estate is one of the pioneers in organic wine-growing. In the vinification process, note is taken of the phases of the moon. The vineyard area totals 20 hectares, including parcels in such renowned sites as the Gaisberg, Hasel, Heiligenstein, Kittmannsberg, Kogelberg, Loiserberg, Panzaun, Schenkenbichl, Spiegel, Steinhaus and Thal. Grape varieties planted are the white varieties Grüner Veltliner (50%), Riesling (15%), Pinot Blanc (12%) and Chardonnay (10%), as well as with the red varieties Zweigelt (8%) and Pinot Noir (5%). The premium wines include, for example, the Grüner Veltliner Spiegel, Grüner Velliner Thal, Grüner Veltliner Maximum, Riesling Heiligenstein, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) Maximum, the straight varietal Pinot Noir and the red blend „Liubisa“ (80% Pinot Noir). Annual production is around 100.000 bottles of wine. The estate is one of the founder members of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association.
The vintage 2007

Ludwig Hiedler has mastered the capricious 2005 vintage with the expertise we have come to expect from him in practically every vintage. Also, as usual, and this is meant as a compliment, the wines show off their origin, vintage and variety. The wines have a character of their own, anything but a mainstream style, providing a real mirror of the Hiedlers. In addition to the unmistakeable taste, the inimitable style, most of the wines also have good ageing potential. All in all a sefe bet on a very high level. We can only gues at the quality of the rare top-level wines of the estate, which are only bottled after extended maturation.
