Burgenland

Wine-growing region in Austria, it is one of four regions in the federal state of Burgenland, and has 3.268 wine growers with a total vineyard area of 8.326 hectares. It is named after the lake of the same name, which is 36 kilometres long and has a surface area of 320 km². The area is known colloquially as the „Seewinkel”, as it forms an angle (Winkel) around the shores of the lake. The region stretches from the north of the state past the northern and the entire eastern shores of the lake as far as the border with Hungary. The most important wine-rpoducing communes are Andau, Apetlon, Frauenkirchen, Gols (one of the largest wine-producing communes in Austria), Halbturn, Illmitz, Jois, Kittsee, Mönchhof, Neusiedl am See, Tadten, Pamhagen, Podersdorf, St. Andrä, Wallern, Weiden and Winden. The Seewinkel wine route begins at Neusiedl am See and runs along the Hungarian border, past the „Lange Lacke” (long lake) nature reserve and back to Neusiedl. The climate is characterised both by continental and Pannonian influences, the large surface of the lake helps to regulate the climate, together with the fog created in autumn it serves as a storage for warmth. This is also beneficial in the creation of botrytis or noble rot (see under botrytis), leading to the production of sweet botrytis wines, which have a great tradition in the area. The vegetative season can last for up to 250 days in a year, an exceptionally long time.

Several types of soil are found, including black earth, loess, gravel and sandy soils. Important single vineyard sites (Rieden) include Altenberg, Bless, Fuchsloch, Gabarinza, Goldberg, Hallebühl, Kaiserberg, Kreuzjoch, Rohrung, Siebenmahd, Spiegel, Straßenäcker, Ungerberg and Vierteljoch. Well-known wine-producing co-operatives are: Pannobile, Pannonischer Reigen and Pannonische Weingärtner Neusiedlersee as well as Select Gols.
