This wine-growing region has a total vineyard area of 3.869 hectares, and is one of the 8 wine-growing regions in the federal state of Lower Austria. The region lies to the west of Vienna, the name is taken from the Kamp river, which flows through the region from Schönberg in the north to Hadersdorf in the south, and flows into the Danube not far from Krems. Wine has been grown here since the early Middle Ages. The independent wine-growing regions Kamptal and Kremstal were previously known as the single region Kamptal-Donauland. Soils are mainly of primeval rock, clay or loess. The climate is influenced by hot Pannonian influences as well as by cool influences from the Waldviertel area. Rainfall is fairly low, and fog is frequently experienced in spring, autumn and winter. The main centre of the region is Langenlois, the largest wine-growing commune in Austria in terms of vineyard area, together with the attached communes of Gobelsburg, Haindorf and Zöbing. Other well-known wine-growing communes are Etsdorf, Hadersdorf, Kammern, Lengenfeld, Schönberg, Sittendorf, Straß im Straßertale and Walkersdorf. The most famous and best vineyard site (Ried) is the Heiligenstein (Zöbing); others are Bleckenweg, Gaisberg, Grub, Dechant, Hasel, Lamm, Loiserberg, Panzaun, Steinmassl and Wechselberg.
There are three well-known producers associations: Kamptal Klassik, Traditionsweingüter Österreich and Vinovative. Among the best-known wine producers are Aichinger, Allram, Angerer Kurt, Arndorfer, Auer Leopold, Brandl, Bründlmayer, Cobaneshof Schneider, Dolle, Eder Burgi, Ehn Ludwig, Eichinger Birgit, Grillmaier, Groll, Hager Oskar, Hiedler, Hirsch, Höfinger Egmont, Kirchmayr, Jurtschitsch, Leithner, Loimer, Nastl Günter, Rabl, Retzl, Schloss Gobelsburg, Steininger Karl, Summerer, Topf Johann, Waldschütz Reinhard, Weixelbaum and Zottlöderer.
