Contact Fred Loimer

The estate is located in the wine-producing town of Langenlois in the Kamptal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. Fred Loimer took over the business from his parents in 1998. His passion for making outstanding wines has earned him the nickname of ”quality maniac”. The new estate buildings were completed in 1999, and caused quite a stir in both wine and architectural circles. The vaulted brick cellar covers an area of 800 m², on property previously owned by aristocrats, holding 70 barriques, 40 tanks and five large oak barrels, all located beneath the main building that resembles a black monolith. Fred Loimer is on of the few Austrian flying winemakers”, he has been a consultant for a huge wine cellar in China. The vineyard area totals 21 hectares, with seven different terroirs, spread over the top-rated Dechant, Käferberg, Seeberg, Spiegel and Steinmassl sites. They are planted with the following varieties: Grüner Veltliner (55%), Riesling (25%), Chardonnay (10%), Pinot Gris (5%) and Pinot Noir (5%) . Bush vines (Guyot) have been favoured since 1985, keeping the grapes close to the soil allows them to absorb a lot of reflected heat. Integrated viticultural practices are implemented, with only organic fertiliser being used, and useful plants and insects are encouraged. The premium wines include, for example, the Riesling Steinmassl, Riesling Seeberg, Grüner Veltliner Käferberg, Grüner Veltliner Spiegel, Grüner Veltliner Lois and Chardonnay Langenlois. In addition, bottle-fermented sparkling wine (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir) as well as some sweet wines are produced. Annual production is around 130.000 bottles of wine, with around 40% being exported, and around half of the exports going to the USA. Fred Loimer considers the greatest challenge of his winemaking career his desire to produce a ”great Pinot Noir”. This is one of the reasons for the inauguration of the ”Loimerandfriends” community project, started in Gumpoldskirchen (Thermenregion wine-growing region) in 2001, with the assistance and advice of the ”old master” on this topic, Gottfried Schellmann, who passed away in 2005. White wines made from Chardonnay grapes were first produced in 2002, from grapes grown on two hectares of land leased from the Stift Melk abbey. Pinot Noir vines were planted in 2004. The Loimer estate is a member of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich association.

The vintage 2006

The wines submitted by the Loimer estate this year represent the basic part of the range, all of them are of very good quality, our personal favourite was the Chardonnay. Unfortunately, the top-level wines ahve not yet been received, so that at this stage we cannot give a solid assessment of the performance for the vintage.
