The estate owned by Franz and Andrea Proidl is located in the commune of Senftenberg close to Krems in the Kremstal wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The current owners are the ninth generation of the family to do so, the name of Proidl was first mentioned in Senftenberg in a document dated 1650. The historic vineyard site Ehrenfels am Burgberg, which was used in medieval times, was reactivated in the early 1990’s. The vineyard area totals 15,5 hectares, mostly in terraced sloping sites, the main white varieties planted are Riesling and Grüner Veltliner (40% each), as well as Gelber Muskateller, Chardonnay and Rivaner (9%), as well as the red varieties Blauer Zweigelt, St.Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (11%). Cool fermentation takes place over an extended period, up to six months in the case of the top quality wines. The premium wines include „Riesling vom Urgestein Pfeningberg“, „Riesling vom Urgestein Ehrenfels“, „Riesling vom Urgestein Hochäcker“ and „Grüner Veltliner vom Urgestein Ehrenfels“. Sweet botrytis dessert wines are also produced. Annual production is around 50.000 bottles of wine. The estate is a member of the „Kremstaler Convent“ association.
The vintage 2006

Gelber Muskateller, White wine, quality wine, dry, Kremstal, 8.90 €
In particular the Riesling and Veltliner wines produced by Franz Proidl can be truly great. The wines of the 2005 vintage are generally speaking very good, although only the Riesling Pfeningberg really shows the customary class. All of the wines actually deserve a higher rating for their concentration and complexity, but rough tannins keep on intruding on the enjoyment of drinking them. Nevertheless we believe some of the wines will still improve with some bottle maturation.

Only two wines representing the 2004 vintage were submitted, including a Müller-Thurgau TBA, this was one of the best wines of this variety we have ever seen.
