Austria
Lower Austria/Niederösterreich
WeinviertelThe estate is located in the commune of Auersthal close to Wolkersdorf, to the northeast of Vienna in the Weinviertel wine-growing region in Lower Austria. The owner, a late starter in wine, was one of the best sports photographers in Austria, and in charge of photography at the „Sportmagazin“ in Vienna. His beginnings in wine production go back to advice given him by a well-known organic winemaker, Johann Zillinger, who suggested he lease a vineyard, and offered his assistance. He stared off with a third of a hectare, today the vineyard area has grown to 4.5 hectares. The area is planted with the following white varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc and Welschriesling, as well as with Zweigelt. Strict organic principles are applied in the vineyard. Weak shoots are broken out, and canopy management implemented to keep the foliage high and well aerated up to the point of optimal grape ripeness. Grapes are thinned out in late summer, leaving only the strongest and healthiest bunches on the vine. Vinification is focused on gentle handling, from hand-picking to maturation. He uses the cellar facilities of friends, who also provide the tank space for maturation. The premium wines include the Grüner Veltliner Wartberg and the white blend Maria (Welschriesing, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay).
