The estate carries the full name „Bio-Weingut Geyerhof“ (organic estate), and is located in the town of Furth, close to Göttweig in the Kremstal wine-growing area in Lower Austria. The farm was first mentioned in the 12th century, the history of the Geyer family reaches back to the 16th century. Ilse Geyer started gaining practical experience in German and French wineries even while she was still at school. She studied at the Agricultural College in Vienna, and successfully completed her studies with a diploma thesis on Viticulture in Argentina. Once she had returned from her overseas travels, she joined her parents in the family business. Her sister Elisabeth moved to the Nikolaihof wine estate when she married. After her marriage in 1988 to Josef Maier, the two decided that the operation, which at the time consisted of five hectares of vineyards, should be converted to organic and biological practices, and this was carried out rigorously. Today, the vineyard area totals 16 hectares, located in the top Kremstal sites Gaisberg, Goldberg, Hoher Rain, Johannisberg, Sprinzenberg and Steinleithn. 80% of the area is plated with white varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, while 20% is planted with the red varieties Zweigelt, Blauburger and Cabernet Sauvignon. The premium wines include the Grüner Veltliner Steinleithn, Riesling Goldberg, Riesling Johannisberg, Chardonnay Reserve and Pinot Blanc Gaisberg. The wines regularly receive high ratings, for instance in the wine guide Falstaff. The competition for the world’s best organic white wine at the organic fair netted two gold medals fort he Geyerhof Chardonnay and Riesling. Annual production is around 60.000 bottles. High-quality spirits aare also produced. The estate is a member of the 11 Frauen & ihre Weine#11 Frauen und ihre Weine association, the Club of European Organic Wine Producers , the Traditionsweingüter Österreich and Bioveritas associations.
